Muslims respect and
revere Jesus (peace be upon him), they believe in and await his second coming. They
consider him one of the greatest of God's messengers to mankind. A Muslim never
refers to him simply as Jesus', but always adds the phrase "peace be upon him".
In
fact, no Muslim is a Muslim if he or she does not believe in Jesus! Islam makes it an article of
faith for its adherents to believe in, love and honor Jesus (and all the prophets, as
a pillar of faith in Islam).
The Quran confirms his
virgin birth (a chapter of the Quran is entitled 'Mary') in her time, and Mary is
considered the purest woman in all creation. The Quran describes the creation of Jesus as
follows (interpretation of the meaning):
"Behold! the
Angels said, `God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all
nations .... O Mary, God gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name shall be
the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and will be one
of those who are near to God, and he shall speak to the people from his cradle and in
maturity, and shall be of the righteous.' She said: `O my Lord! How shall I have a son
when no man has touched me?' He said: `Even so; God creates what He wills. When He decrees
a thing, He but says to it, "Be!" and it is." [Quran 3:42-47]
"..she
(Mary) withdrew from her people to an eastern place; And screened herself off from them.
Then WE sent OUR (Ruh) angel (Gabriel) to her and he appeared to her in the form of a man
in all aspects. She said, `I seek refuge with the Gracious God from you if you indeed do
fear HIM.' The angel said, `I am only a messenger of your Lord, that I may give you glad
tidings of a righteous son.' She said, `How can I have a son when no man has touched me,
neither have I been unchaste ?' The angel said, `Thus it shall be.' your Lord said, `It is
easy for ME; and WE shall do so that WE may make him a Sign unto men, and a mercy from US,
and it is a thing decreed.' So she conceived him, and withdrew with him to a remote place.
And the pains of child-birth drove her unto the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, `O, would
that I had died before this and had become a thing quite forgotten! Then he (Angel or
Jesus) called her from beneath her, saying, `Grieve not. your Lord has placed a rivulet
below you; `And shake towards yourself the trunk of the palm-tree; it will drop upon you
fresh ripe dates; `So, eat and drink and cool thine eye. And if you see any man, say, `I
have vowed a fast to the Gracious God; I will, therefore, not speak this day to any human
being.'" [Quran 19:16-26]
Jesus (peace be upon him)
was born miraculously through the same power which had brought Adam (peace be upon him)
into being without a father:
"Truly, the
likeness of Jesus unto God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then
said to him, `Be!' and he was." [Quran 3:59]
During his prophetic
mission, Jesus (peace be upon him) was granted and performed many miracles. The Quran
tells us that he said (interpretation of meaning):
"I have come
to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of the clay, as it were, the figure
of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God's leave. And I heal the
blind and the lepers, and I raise the dead by God's leave, and I will inform you of
what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you, if
you are believers." [Quran 3:49]
Other miracles
include speaking soon after birth in defense of his mother's piety, when the Jews
approached Mary and her infant Jesus to question her and inquire about the fatherless
child:
".. Then she
brought him to her people, carrying him. They said: "O Mary! truly you has committed
a monstrous thing! O sister of Aaron! (i.e his sister in faith, righteousness and asceticism
or it is a way of linguistic attribution in Arabic) your father was not a wicked man nor
was your mother a harlot." Then she pointed to him. They said: "How should we
speak to one who was a child in the cradle?" Jesus said: "I am a servant of God,
He has given me revelation and has made me a prophet; and He has made me blessed
wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live; (He) has
made me dutiful to my mother, and not arrogant and graceless. And peace be upon me the day
I was born, and peace be upon me the day I shall die, and the day I shall be raised up to
life again.'" [Quran 19:27-34]
God's other gifts to him
included healing the blind and the sick, reviving the dead, and, most importantly, the
message he was carrying. These miracles were granted to him by God to establish him as a
prophet. According to the Quran, he was not crucified, but only appeared so (1); instead, God saved him and raised him unto Heaven.
"And when
Jesus became conscious of their disbelief, he cried: Who will be my helpers in the cause
of God? The disciples said: We will be God's helpers. We believe in God, and bear you
witness that we have surrendered (unto Him). Our Lord! We believe in that which You have
revealed and we follow him whom You have sent. Enroll us among those who witness (to the
truth). And Jesus' enemies schemed and God also schemed, and God is the Best of schemers.
And when God said' `O Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself and will clear you of
the charges of those who disbelieve" [Quran 3:52-55]
"And for
their (the Jews) disbelief and for their uttering against Mary a grave calumny; And because of
their saying (in boast): We killed the Messiah Jesus son of Mary, God's messenger,
but
they killed him not nor crucified him, but (it / he) was appeared
so to them, and those who differ therein are certainly in a state of doubt about it;
they have no certain knowledge thereof, but only pursue a conjecture; for of a surety they
killed him not. But God raised him up unto Himself. And God is Mighty, Wise." [Quran
4:156-158]
God Almighty sent down gospel (2) upon Jesus (pbuh), this
original gospel revealed to Jesus (pbuh) was a message/revelation (initially transmitted
by word of mouth) and Which has never been recorded, it wasn't a book some place. The
bible actually refers to the translations (of trans. of trans.) of the collection of
'writing accounts' or 'narrations' of the life of Jesus (pbuh) which were written many
years after the time of Jesus (pbuh), beside the other books of the N. & O.
Testaments. It was only in the 2nd century that these 'accounts' got the nickname,
gospels. The Church itself does not claim that the books or gospels of the Bible are the
actual word of God, but His inspiration (his teachings) through the words of
men. Their best claim on this, that Jesus himself
was the 'gospel message' of God, and that such 'writing accounts' recorded his birth,
ministry and departure, so they recorded Jesus life i.e. the 'gospel message'. However,
even this claim is known to have serious problems: Firstly, there is No unbroken and
absolutely dependable chains of transmission, to accurately trace them back to the claimed
authors; also none of the Original writings (manuscripts) have survived and exist today
(un-proved authenticity). Secondly, the disciples native tongue was Syriac or Aramaic, but
most Greek-speaking authors heard these traditions in the Aramaic vernacular and committed
them to writing in Greek, So, we have serious problem of the unreliability of translations
and re-translations that affected the substance of the message, and imposed on it their
established beliefs. Thirdly, there was an careless attitude towards such books at that
time, So, It seems quite obvious that this status (inspiration) was given to these books
only at a later stage; initially, they were neither considered as Divine, nor as canons of
a new religion, but simply 'narrations'. Fourthly,
Because of the theological motifs and presuppositions in the faith of
the early church, it is difficult to write with certainty any authentic
life of Jesus; In other words, there is no un-conjectural or certain
proof for the attribution of today's whole 'Christianity' to Jesus
Christ, rather, its Mainlines are constructed About Jesus Christ
(by others' views), but Not From Jesus Christ. Fifthly, the Christian scholars admit the
historical fact that there were, contemporary to the Gospels, many other gospels (20-300
gospel) in circulation and all were accepted by the different Churches of that time. The
gospels used in Churches now (narrations/letters
from what are claimed to be written by disciples or by those who
had been companions of disciples) were only selected in the 4th
century. Sixthly,
all of the writings (manuscripts) in our possession date back to the
time when there were already doctrinal and Christological debates within
the early Church, So, they are in no way prove that they contain the
correct interpretation of Jesus' mission. Seventhly, we cannot
prove All what is narrated in these books without proving their validity, and we
cannot prove their validity without proving their claims to be inspired which in turn
depends, essentially, on All what is narrated in them; that beside the lack of
reliable transmission and the lack of definitive external evidences (like the
irrelevant prophecies and their fabricated fulfillment), So, it keeps you go around in
circles without being able to base your reasoning on facts or to arrive at facts. Eighthly, Even experts on the text of these gospels believe that
it has not remained safe from intentional and/or unintentional changes,
additions and interpolations in the text. Ninthly, these accounts (gospels) cannot
be expected to take their recorded events at face value especially as
they have many mutually conflicting
and contradicting
reports for the same story. Finally, it has been proved by many Christian and Biblical
scholars (yet millions of ordinary Christians are unaware) that the present Gospels -Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as well as many other Gospels- were written by
"Unknown" writers, and not the disciples, who used for their writings the names
of those disciples "only to gain ecclesiastical recognition".
So, to conclude, as any Bible comprises
two parts - the Old and New Testaments - ; Only in the New Testament is found some direct
quotes of words spoken by Jesus Christ, thus, at most some of what Jesus (pbuh)
uttered (and may be some other verses) could be considered as part of his original gospel,
whereas the other parts of the New Testament are not. Those 'writing accounts' or
'books/gospels attributed to the apostles' contain (the basics of) the
original gospel/message of Jesus (pbuh) in them somewhere.
Interestingly, most of what is written in the New Testament was
authored by Paul (Jew of Tarsus), who never met Jesus (pbuh) in person,
and one of the worst persecutors and killers of the early followers of
Jesus (pbuh), but, suddenly, he claimed to be receiving 'visions' from Jesus after his
departure. Through
the apostle Barnabas he was accepted by the rest of the apostles. He
decided to preach to the Gentiles (Non-Jews pagans). Paul found it at
all but impossible to convince the Gentiles to accept the teaching of
Jesus (pbuh). He continued to compromise with the pagan gentiles and
simplify the religion of Jesus for them, molding it closer and closer to
their established beliefs in order to make it more appealing to them. He
gained more converts than the more strict and demanding original true
faith. In the authority of his 'visions', he used extensive philosophy
to spread his doctrines. Consequently, Paul was mostly responsible for
elevating Jesus to the status of Son of God, formulating (or inventing)
many concepts and doctrines such as the original sin, atonement,
resurrection.. ect, So, he laid, with his followers of Gentiles and
Jews, the groundwork for losing the true clear message in
mythical dogmas. In the first centuries CE, Christianity split into
innumerable fighting sects of countless divergent beliefs and countless
gospels of varying degrees of authenticity.
"... they too have
abandoned a good part of that with which they were exhorted. So WE have
caused enmity and hatred among them till the Day of Resurrection. And
God will inform them of what they used to do" [Quran 5:14].
The books/gospels of the bible, were selected in 325 A.C., with the aid
of the pagan Roman empire, during the
Nicene Council in which the creed of "Trinity" was officially introduced
for the first time ..

Neither Muhammad (peace
be upon him), nor Jesus (peace be upon him), came to change the basic doctrine of the
belief in one God, brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it. In the Quran
Jesus (peace be upon him), is reported as saying that he came:
"To attest
the law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden you; I
have come to you with a sign form your Lord, so fear God and obey me." [Quran
3:50]
And this what will be
said on the Day of Judgment:
"And when
God will say (namely unto Jesus on the Day of Judgment): O Jesus son of Mary! Did you say
unto mankind: Take me and my mother for two gods beside God? He will say: God be
glorified! It was not mine to utter that to which I had no right. If I used to say it,
then YOU surely have known it. YOU know what is in my mind, and I know not what is in YOUR
mind. Behold, YOU, only YOU are the Knower of Things Hidden. I said nothing to them except
that which YOU did command me, (saying): Worship God, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a
witness over them as long as I remained among them, but when YOU took me up, YOU was the
Watcher over them, and YOU are Witness over all things. If YOU punish them, they are YOUR
creatures; and if YOU forgive them, YOU are the Mighty, the Wise." [Quran 5:116,118]
(1)
One interpretation of 'appeared so' in [Quran 4:157] that it
was someone else who was made to look like him and was taken in his place (Judas the
traitor in one opinion); another interpretation that they
thought in their minds that they had done.
(2) The closest name to the word "Injeel"
mentioned in the Quran. |
